Lyndale yogis

Open Streets is a free annual event in south Minneapolis that transforms Lyndale Avenue, one of the city’s busiest commercial nodes, into an open space for bikes, pedestrians, rollerbladers and even yogis. The June 10th event diverted traffic off 20 blocks of Lyndale Avenue while allowing cross traffic at intersecting streets.

We thought we’d help out with the effort by collecting traffic data for the six hour event.

We collected video with our COUNTcam system at four strategic locations along Lyndale Avenue. We watched 24 hours of total video, which we did on fast forward in approximately 7.2 hours with our PC-TAS software. The system worked great at capturing intersection volume and observing event-goers behaviors.

We counted a total of 24,717 bicycles, 8,837 pedestrians and 8,348 vehicles crossing the four intersections over the event's 6 hour period.

p.s.  Thanks to Nate Hood in the office for coordinating the project and putting together this post.

  • I was leaving a Tigers game in Detroit on Saturday and came across a similar cycling group. The only problem was that the group thought it was completely okay to make a wrong way and illegal trafic maneuver while the were riding through town. I am very supportive of the bike community but poor rider knowledge of traffic laws does not help their cause
