PRO-TEQ out of Great Britain has developed a patented system to spray on a glow in the dark “elastomeric coating” for pavements, which they call Starpath.  It’s being used on trails in England.  Check out the video below.

PRO-TEQ claims you don’t need street lights with their Starpath system.  I would love to see this application in person and get some type of illumination test results.

This could be a great application for bike lanes/pedestrian paths – whether they’re separate trails or on street facilities.  Could this be applied at intersections instead of street lights?  I’m reserving judgment until more data is available, but it might be a cost-effective solution for rural intersections.  Hopefully FHWA or a transportation research center can get some research funding.
