Turning Stop Sign Posts into Art

By Mike Spack

November 4, 2014

The city of St. Paul, Minnesota has budgeted approximately $300,000 for public art this year.  Under the city’s art program, artist Lisa Elias was hired to re-imagine the boring sign post.  She came up with the floral design shown in the photos below and about 100 stop sign posts have been replaced with the “artsy” sign post (they targeted signs that were in need of replacement anyways).

Our industry doesn’t really factor aesthetics into our designs, but I’d love to see more thought given to ways we can improve the look of the hardware we install in neighborhoods.

These sign posts cost approximately $900 each (+ $250 to install), but I’m sure the cost could come down significantly with mass production of a standardized design.
